Games between the rival schools are still good, but the atmosphere has changed, as only a few people were allowed to watch the Feb. 12 Continental League game at ThunderRidge.
The Grizzlies, ranked sixth in the CHSAANow.com Class 5A poll, outscored the third-ranked Golden Eagles 11-2 in the second overtime period to earn an 80-71 victory.
The win evened the series between the two schools at 8-8 in games going back to 2006.
Junior Joey Biello scored 18 points to pace the balanced scoring attack for ThunderRidge, which was playing only its second game of the season because of COVID concerns. Senior Ben Bowen popped in 27 points for Mountain Vista.
The following is a roundup of action and news between Feb. 4-13.
Cherry Creek 78, Overland 55 - Myles Purchase scored 20 points as the No. 1-ranked Bruins defeated No. 8 Overland on Feb. 10. The Bruins whipped Cherokee Trail, 77-50, on Feb. 12.
Mountain Vista 58, Heritage 54 - The third-ranked Golden Eagles outscored Heritage 20-9 in the fourth quarter for a come-from-behind win on Feb. 9 as Ben Bowen scored 22 points for Vista.
Chaparral 66, Eaglecrest 47 - Luke Williams scored 19 points to lead the seventh-ranked Wolverines to a non-league win on Feb. 8 over Eaglecrest.
Legend 57, Castle View 55 - Seniors Sean Evans and Tanner Lamb each had 23 points in the Feb. 9 conquest of Castle View.
Eaglecrest 68, Arapahoe 47 - The Warriors were outscored 37-15 in the second half in a Centennial League loss on Feb. 10.
Lutheran 96, SkyView Academy 31 - The Lions, No. 1 ranked in the Class 3A poll, cruised to victory in a Feb. 12 contest.
Mountain Vista 5, Doherty 4 - Easton Burg scored the game winner on a power play with 6:52 elapsed in overtime for the ninth-ranked Golden Eagles in the win on Feb. 8.
Cherry Creek 3, Heritage 1 - All the goals were scored in the third period in this Feb. 9 contest between the No. 7 Bruins and the Eagles, who were ranked tenth. Riley Hunt-Bahn managed a goal and assist for Creek.
Chaparral 9, Pine Creek 2 - The No. 5 Wolverines used a 46-7 shot advantage to down Pine Creek on Feb. 9. Colin McCready had a hat trick and four points in the win while Landen Shay added two goals and three points.
Valor Christian 7, Lewis Palmer 0 - Seven different players scored as the fourth-ranked Eagles rolled to a Feb. 10 victory.
Heritage 5,Columbine 0 - The Eagles had a 29-3 shot advantage over the final two periods when they scored all their goals in the blanking of the Rebels.
Regis Jesuit 58, Highlands Ranch 53 - In a Continental League showdown between the fourth-ranked Raiders and the third-ranked Falcons on Feb. 9, Samantha Jones had 21 points for the Raiders while Payton Muma and Tia Slade each had 15 points for Highlands Ranch. The Falcons rebounded with a 60-25 victory over Douglas County as Slade collected 14 points in the Feb. 12 contest.
Valor Christian 84, Dakota Ridge 29 - The second-ranked Eagles made a dozen 3-point shots and had four players in double figures in a Feb. 8 rout. Senior Haley Huard led Valor with 15 points.
Arapahoe 47, Eaglecrest 41 - Sam Crispe had a double with 20 points and 19 rebounds as the sixth-ranked Warriors notched a Centennial League win on Feb. 10.
ThunderRidge 49, Mountain Vista 42 - The Grizzlies outscored Vista 37-17 in the second half to post a win in the Feb. 12 game. Adrianna Baker led ThunderRidge with 18 points while Amiya Robinson had 14 points for the Golden Eagles which shot just 23% from the field.
Chaparral 56, Lutheran 50 - Lutheran, top-ranked in the Class 3A poll, held its own against the Wolverines in a Feb. 13 game.
The top-ranked girls swimmers based on times from this season were published Feb. 11 on prepswimco.com.
Junior Elizabeth Brock of Cherry Creek has the fastest Class 5A time so far in the 200 freestyle event (1:52.60) and the 500 freestyle (5:00.02). Her Creek teammate, sophomore Teagan Steinmetz, has recorded the best time in the 200 IM (2:06.20).
Anna Shaw of Heritage has the fastest 4A times in the 50 freestyle (:24.48) and 100 freestyle (:52.78). Heritage has also turned in the best relay times in the 200 medley (1:50.00) and 200 freestyle (1:40.76).
On The Mat’s individual rankings of wrestlers were revealed Feb. 11 and two Class 5A boys athletes from the South Metro area were top ranked. Jeff Strickenbeger of Ponderosa was No. 1 at 120 pounds and Max Black of Douglas County topped the list of 126-pound wrestlers.
In the girls rankings, Rosalind Ramos-Cruz of Mountain Vista was No. 1 at 120 pounds and Emma Burk of Douglas County was top-rated at 161 pounds.
