A round of severe weather rumbled through parts of Denver and its suburbs in the midafternoon. It prompted tornado warnings for Northglenn, Thornton and parts of Arvada. Tornado warning sirens sounded in Brighton, but no touchdowns were reported.
Douglas County was under tornado warnings for part of the afternoon. But as was the case in the northern area, there were no immediate reports of touchdowns.
There were reports of hail to the National Weather Service. Spotters reported 1-inch diameter hail in parts of Northglenn and near Westminster and 3/4-inch diamater hail near Todd Creek, west of Brighton. Hail up to 1.5 inches in diameter felli n Arvada. Two-inch diameter hail fell east of the White Ranch Open Space Park near Golden.
In Douglas County, spotters reported 3/4-inch hail near Cottonwood Canyon west of Castle Rock. Spotters also reported 1- inch hail south of Castle Rock. Several school districts went to shelter-in-place status because of the weather.
The cause was an unusually strong summer cold front. Before it got to the Front Range, it produced flash flood threats and rain in Glenwood Canyon, forcing I-70 to close and prompting a flash-flood warning earlier in the morning near Grand Junction.
One more day of cooler temperatures is on tap. Then the late-summer heat returns over the weekend.
