Colorado students are invited to participate in the 2022 National Radon Video and Poster contests.
The contests take place annually through a partnership between the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment (CDPHE), the Conference of Radiation Control Program Directors and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.
The contests provide students with an opportunity to creatively raise awareness about the importance of radon testing, and to inform people of the dangers of radon in their homes, states a news release.
Students between the ages of 9 and 14 are eligible to participate in the poster contest, and the video contest is open to students between the ages of 14 and 18. Students must be enrolled in a public, private, territorial, tribal, Department of Defense or home school; or be a member of a sponsoring club such as scouting, art, computer, science or 4-H.
Contestants have the option to choose between five radon-awareness topics for their poster or video entries. Judging criteria for the poster contest includes content accuracy, visual communication of topic, reproducibility and originality. Video entries must also be original, and created as a 30-second public service announcement/commercial-style video that encourages residents to test and/or mitigate their homes for radon.
State winners will receive $300 for first place, $200 for second and $100 for third. Teachers of students with winning entries will each receive $100. The first-place poster and first-place video will represent Colorado in the national contest.
Poster and video entries must be received by Nov. 20.
Only one entry per student is allowed.
