The food industry brought Jamie Elward and Jordan Blaydes, now wife and husband, together — but Elward didn't think opening a restaurant was in the plans.
“Jordan, it was his dream,” said Elward, who met him about four years ago when they worked at Steakhouse 10, just blocks away from where the couple opened their own bistro and wine bar on Dec. 4.
A partner asked the couple if they wanted to open a restaurant — Elward thought it was a crazy idea. But the plan progressed, with a bit of luck: They met the man who would become their chef on a honeymoon after their marriage a year ago.
And after two years of effort, One Barrel, featuring more than 100 bottles and 25 wines by the glass, is finally open and looks to put a fine-dining establishment on the historic 3400 block of South Broadway.
Englewood “really needed something with great wine,” said Elward, 33, and now, it's open on the city's downtown block. “We thought, we had gone to wine bars, and they always have small plates. I get hungry when I drink wine.”
Sitting on the ground floor of the Broadway Lofts apartments on the corner of the block, One Barrel hopes to play a key role in the South Broadway ecosystem.
“We want people to be able to come for shows at the Gothic Theatre — start at the (Brew on Broadway), come here and have dinner, work their way down,” Elward said. “We want to bring that missing piece to Englewood.”
Her bistro comes amid a wave of new businesses in the downtown Englewood area: Samadhi Yoga and Peace Cellar, which features plants, jewelry, clothes and more, held openings early this year on Broadway's 3400 block. The Duffer Haus bar opened at 3470 S. Broadway in March. Other new faces include Aki Sushi at 3484 S. Broadway, The Tabletop Tap — a bar also offering board games and video games — at 3394 S. Broadway and the bgood medical-marijuana dispensary at 11 W. Hampden Ave.
Elward and Blaydes live a half-mile away from One Barrel, and they didn't want to open anywhere else.
“We live in Englewood and really believe in this community,” Elward said. “We've gotten so close to the businesses in the area.”
The Breakfast Queen, just across the street, let One Barrel's chef, David Polakoff, come in at night and use the kitchen for training.
“Without them, we wouldn't have been able to open on time,” said Elward, who said she's gotten to know the owners at the nearby Whiskey Biscuit restaurant and bar and the Englewood Grand bar down the block.
Elward has experience managing, marketing, serving and bartending, and Blaydes, the general manager, has served and bartended as well, Elward said. They don't see other restaurants as competition, but as collaborators.
“We want them to get along, boost people up,” Elward said.
On opening night, customers began to trickle in at the bar, under the warm lighting and décor. Steps away, Sam Davis, 28, came with two friends who work with her at a nearby school. They were among the first to take a table.
“We frequently go out for drinks after work, and we were excited to see a new wine bar in the area,” said Davis, who lives in Denver. “We really like it — it's lovely in here.”
Cliff Dickinson, 35, lives just a few steps away, upstairs from One Barrel at the Broadway Lofts apartments.
“Between The Whiskey Biscuit, to the Englewood Grand next door and Tabletop Tap, I cycle between those,” Dickinson said. “It's nice to be in walking distance to everything.”
